Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., said Thursday that although former Vice President Joe Biden is a “good person” and a “great” vice president, she is “a candidate for our times.”
The senator, who is running against Biden for the Democratic nomination, told CNBC’s John Harwood in an interview, “Vice President Biden is a good person and was a great vice president. I believe that I’m a candidate for our times.”
Harwood pointed out their age difference, Klobuchar is 58, while Biden is 76, to which the senator said, “I did it by not selling out on Democratic values. I did it by getting votes of people that didn’t agree with me on everything, but knew I was telling them the truth.”
Later, when pressed on her phrase “a candidate for our time,” Klobuchar said, “that’s part of my argument, but it doesn’t mean you couldn’t be older and do the job. I’m not being ageist here. It’s just that my story is different than everyone else’s.”
The senator went on to discuss the economy, which she said needs “rebalancing,” while stressing that she does “support capitalism, but not unbridled capitalism. You’ve always had checks and balances.
“If you want to make our economy work, everyone has to be able to participate in it. If you can’t afford health care or your pharmaceuticals, you’ve got to do something.”
