Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich in an opinion piece Friday ripped Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez as being "profoundly vicious, cruel, and dishonest" and accused her of being "eager and determined" to destroy the United States "as we have known it."
"When your goals are that radical, lying is simply part of the game," Gingrich wrote for Fox News. "When you despise American values and find the American people 'deplorable' and contemptible, lying is perfectly natural."
He added that it's time for "decent people" to stand up to her and ask "'have you no shame?'"
Ocasio-Cortez, while at the border, said Border Patrol guards made her feel threatened and that a migrant woman told her she was directed to drink from a toilet, among other claims.
"The tragedy of Ocasio-Cortez’s type of vicious, deliberately dishonest politics is it sets the stage for innocent people to die," said Gingrich, pointing to the picture of a young father and his daughter who drowned trying to cross the Rio Grande to enter the United States.
"(It) should serve as a moral condemnation of every Democrat trying to use the border as a political weapon against (President Donald) Trump," Gingrich wrote.
Gingrich added that Ocasio-Cortez "and her fellow left-wing activists" are sending signals to encourage more people to try to enter the U.S. illegally, including making promises of free health care.
Ocasio-Cortez fired back on Twitter to Gingrich and the GOP for their attacks, saying she'd take their claims that she is a liar as a "compliment."
"Who else do they call liars?" she said. "96% of scientists who agree on climate change, Millions of Americans they locked up in the War on Drugs, #MeToo survivors."
