The Rev. Al Sharpton was critical of Thursday's Oscar announcement in which
no black actors received nominations for the second year in a row.
"Hollywood is like the Rocky Mountains, the higher up you get the whiter it gets," Sharpton said in a statement reported by
The Hollywood Reporter.
"And this year’s Academy Awards will be yet another Rocky Mountain Oscars," he said.
"Yet again, deserving black actors and directors were ignored by the Academy — which reinforces the fact that there are few if any blacks with real power in Hollywood."
Sharpton said Hollywood presents a "fraudulent image of progressive and liberal politics and policies."
Being left off the list of awards consideration is more goes past just having actors miss out on having their good work recognized, Sharpton said, but "winning an Oscar has long-lasting cultural and economic impacts."
