Sheldon Adelson is supporting a trip to Israel by Donald Trump this summer before the Republican National Convention in July, according to three sources close to the Las Vegas casino billionaire.
"I’m sure Sheldon suggested the trip," one of the sources told
The Guardian.
Morton Klein, president of the Zionist Organization of America in New York and another Adelson confidant, told the Guardian that Trump’s contact for Israel, Jason Greenblatt, said several weeks ago that the presumptive presidential nominee was "going to go there before the convention," which begins on July 18.
Nothing yet is final, however, the sources told the Guardian.
Adelson, head of the Las Vegas Sands casino empire, is head of the pro-Israel Republican Jewish Coalition. He endorsed Trump last week, later saying that he was prepared to donate as much as $100 million to the developer's campaign.
He also is close the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Trump canceled a trip to Israel in December after Netanyahu attacked his plan to ban Muslims.
He has since, however, indicated that he would visit the Jewish state, should he win in November, the Guardian reports.
The trip is being arranged by members of the coalition, according to the report. The group arranged a trip for Mitt Romney in the summer of 2012 — and he met with Netanyahu, the sources said.
Adelson and several top coalition board members flew to Israel for a fundraiser that helped the former Massachusetts governor.
Hope Hicks, a Trump spokeswoman, told the Guardian in a statement that "there are no plans for a visit at this time."
But she also declined to say whether any discussions or planning has occurred about a trip to Israel this summer.
