Schiff: More Reason Than Ever to Seek Barr's Resignation

House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff, D-Calif., continued with his calls for Attorney General William Barr to step down Thursday, saying he has even more reasons after hearing his testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Wednesday.

"The most dangerous thing the attorney general had to say, and something that makes him every bit as unfit for office as the president, is that he gave content to his view that the president is above the law," Rep. Schiff told MSNBC's "Morning Joe."

And if that is Barr's view on President Donald Trump, then "he would probably take the view that he could quash that case because he'd believe it to be unfair," Schiff said. "That is a recipe for lawlessness."

Schiff also said Trump and Barr are both wrong when they make the broad claim there was no evidence of conspiracy.

"What we need to look at still — because we don't have any information really about this, and this has the greatest potential to warp the policy of the United States in a pro-Russia direction or a direction that may not be in our national interests — and that is what about the counterintelligence investigation into whether the president or people around him were compromised, whether it was criminal or not," Schiff said.

Schiff said, though, he has not called for Barr's impeachment, but he does want him to step down.

"I think we need to take the steps now that would lead to potential contempt hearings and a vote in the House with respect to not just his failure to appear, but his failure to provide any of the information underlying the Mueller report," Schiff said. "He hasn't paid attention to the report, so I do think we need to initiate the proceedings that could lead to holding him in contempt."
