Judicial Watch: ACORN Offshoot Got $80,000 Fed Grant

Wednesday, 06 July 2011 04:30 PM EDT

An offshoot of the disbanded organization known as ACORN is receiving federal funds despite an October 2009 federal law banning all funding to the group. Judicial Watch found that the Obama administration’s Department of Housing and Urban Development issued a $79,819 grant to an ACORN offshoot, Affordable Housing Centers of America, The Daily Caller reported.

Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton told The Daily Caller that the grant appears to be in violation of an October 2009 law President Barack Obama signed banning all funding of “ACORN and any ACORN-related affiliate.”

“If President Obama is serious about the ACORN funding ban he signed in 2009, he’ll try to get to the bottom of this,” the Caller quoted Fitton as saying. “I think many members of Congress will be interested in this new development.”

“ACORN basically reorganized under a different name,” he said. “I don’t think this happened by accident. They’re all the same people still involved just working for organizations with different names.”

ACORN, which purportedly disbanded in March 2010, was stripped of federal funding after activist filmmaker James O’Keefe released secretly recorded videos of conversations with various chapters of the ACORN community-organizing groups that gave him advice on how to cover up prostitution activities.
