President Donald Trump worried that his campaign may have been done for after the “Access Hollywood” tape became public, former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie said over the weekend.

Christie, who was among the first Republicans to endorse Trump in 2016, said that the president privately expressed concern that his campaign was doomed after the release of a recording of a vulgar conversation he had several years ago on “Access Hollywood.”

“He said, ‘Is it over?'” Christie said, according to Mediaite. “I said, ‘No, because you are running against the single worst presidential candidate in my lifetime. So we’ve got time to recover. But we’ve got to do it the right way.'”

The former governor said Trump bounced back after the second presidential debate, which occurred only two days after the tape became public.

Christie told SiriusXM in January that the tape’s release “was one of the few times in the 17 years I’ve known him that I actually saw the president genuinely embarrassed. He looked embarrassed. He acted embarrassed.”
