Christie: Inaugural Subpoenas 'Much More Serious Threat'

President Donald Trump faces more trouble from the recent subpoenas involving his inaugural committee than special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation, according to former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie.

ABC News reported Monday that prosecutors in the Southern District of New York's political corruption section have subpoenaed documents from Trump's inaugural committee, which raised a record-breaking $107 million. This investigation reportedly focuses on Trump's fundraising before and immediately after his election in 2016.

"This is why I've been saying for months that the Southern District of New York investigation presents a much more serious threat to the administration, potentially, than what Bob Mueller is doing," Christie, a former federal prosecutor, told ABC, where he is now a contributor.

"Unlike Bob Mueller who has restrictions placed upon him by the deputy attorney general when he was appointed – that his inquiry is on Russia, interference in the election, and potential Russian collusion – and you saw that Mueller reacted to those restrictions by sending the Michael Cohen matter that he discovered to the Southern District of New York," the former Republican governor said in an interview with MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell Tuesday night. "The Southern District of New York has no restrictions."
