Open-Door Mosque Stokes Tensions in South Africa

The opening of a controversial open mosque in Cape Town, South Africa has stirred anger and unrest in the larger Muslim community. Founder Taj Hargey opened the mosque Sept. 19 with the view to becoming South Africas first Quran-centric, gender-equal and non-sectarian Islamic house of God.

An Oxford professor — and proudly Cape Town born — Taj Hargey says that 20 years ago South Africa went through a political revolution, now it is time for a religious revolution especially in the Muslim community. Hargey has opened his doors to non-Muslims, homosexuals and is allowing women to lead prayers.

He is promoting equality in a religion that he describes as chauvinistic.

On the day of the opening critics protested outside the mosque saying that it violated the tenets of Islam and thus no Muslims would be allowed in.

The Muslim Judicial Council — MJC — released a statement strongly advising Muslims to refrain from attending the open mosque. However, at the same time, the MJC’s Nabeweya Malick told Eyewitness News people shouldn't protest against the opening of the mosque.

Malick's advice may have fallen on deaf ears as shortly after his statement the mosque was firebombed by angry critics. The front side of the building was damaged but nobody was injured.

The less extreme critics have taken to social media to demonstrate their disapproval.
