After initially delaying former President Donald Trump’s withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan by May 1st until later in the fall, the Biden administration is now dealing with the most significant foreign policy debacle of their tenure.
It is pertinent now to address that Biden and his cabinet were not prepared as they should have been in ensuring soldiers and foreign diplomats were safe and secure during the withdrawal.
At this point, the plan was so disorganized that the United States Embassy in Kabul had to be aided by returning troops so it could be safely evacuated, instead of taking such measures beforehand.
As of Sunday, the Taliban will transfer into power, with the region now being dubbed as the “Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan.”
As of Monday, the United States military now has more troops in Afghanistan aiding the attempted withdrawal than before our “withdrawal” began.
Most voters on both sides of the American political aisle agreed with the move to get troops out of Afghanistan in general, whether it came from Trump or Biden. However, the problem originates from Biden's terms for timing and execution.
First, his administration's delay from President Trump's proposed date of May 1 had no reasoning behind it. It seems it was done simply so that Biden and other decision-makers did not have to agree to something Trump inititated.
Likewise, Trump had already begun to slowly withdraw troops from Afghanistan by the thousands in phases by early September of 2020. He also made efforts to bring troops home in irawq and had organized peace treaties in the Middle East.
So the immediate previous foreign policy set the groundwork that Biden could have quickly taken and run with. Instead, he opted to alter course due to political reasons with disastrous redults.
Unfortunately, this has been the case for Joe Biden’s entire career regarding foreign policy.
Biden supported troops getting deployed to Iraq for a war that earned no side a benefit. He claimed that while he was vice president, the Obama Administration would have soldiers home for Afghanistan to defend itself. Biden remarked on his visit to Afghanistan in 2012 that “Let me say it plainly, Mr. President, it is not our intention to govern or to nation-build.”
Yet, then-President Obama later increased the number of troops staying in the country, doing the complete opposite of what Biden had told the Afghanistan government.
And now, instead of listening to the experts, making common-sense decisions, or considering that an alternate mindset may have been the correct one, Biden listened to anti-Trump fanatics in his administration to change America's withdrawal plans.
The United States military is now forced to send troops back to a warzone to evacuate Americans and protect them from Taliban forces.
The question of “Why was a better process not enacted months ago?” is one in plenty of American minds, irregardless if they're a neoconservative war-hawk or an isolationist.
If the withdrawal got kick-started at the original date of May 1, who knows how safe and efficient the process could have been. It is hard to argue that it could have been worse than what has already happened just in these last couple of weeks.
Troops deserved to be safely sent back to their families in planned phases instead of the conglomerate of incompetence we have witnessed from President Biden and his cabinet.
While the overall decision to bring our military home from war is the desired policy of many Americans, the manner in which it was done is unsettling for hopes of withdrawal from other areas in the future.
