Nationalist politicians in Europe who take a hardline against illegal immigration are often dubbed the “Donald Trumps” of their respective countries.
Geert Wilders of the Netherlands, head of the Dutch Party for Freedom in his country’s elections Wednesday, and National Front presidential hopeful Marine LePen of France have also both voiced admiration of and support for Trump.
But the U.S. President won’t reciprocate. On Monday, Newsmax asked the White House whether Trump was aware of Wilders and LePen and what he thought of these “would-be Trumps.”
“I don't know the answer to that,” Press Secretary Sean Spicer told us, “We'll allow sovereign nations to have their own elections without interference.”
Spicer’s indifference was in stark contrast to what Wilders said about Trump when Newsmax spoke to him at the Republican National Convention in July last year. “I respect him a lot,” the Dutch politician said of Trump. “I hope and I think he could be elected. If you would have expected what is happening now a year ago, no one would have believed you.”
Wilders added that the election of Trump is “up to the American people. If I were an American voter, I would vote for him.”
