The two articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump were delivered to the Senate Thursday morning and Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts swore in the senators as "impartial jurors."

Against such a gloomy setting, the White House voiced confidence that the president's trial in the Senate would be over in time for him to deliver the State of the Union address, scheduled for Feb. 4.

"I think it's extraordinarily unlikely that [a Senate trial would be] going beyond two weeks," a senior Trump administration official told reporters. "We think that this case is overwhelmingly for the president, and the Senate is not going to have any need to be taking that amount of time on this."

Speaking on background, the same source explained the official view that "the reason [a trial] doesn't take a very long time is that the facts are simple and the facts are on the president's side. And the House Democrats don't have any credible evidence to show any wrongdoing."

The official strongly hinted there would be additional House members — present and former ones — joining the president's legal team.

As for the growing talk of former national security advisor John Bolton testifying in the Senate, the official simply said, "it would be extraordinary to have the national security advisor testifying about his communications directly with the president about foreign policy and national security matters."
