The strange and somewhat intriguing claim in the New Yorker magazine this weekend that the Kremlin was behind the President’s decision not to name Mitt Romney as secretary of state was dismissed by the White House on Monday.
At the regular briefing for reporters at the White House, Newsmax asked about the article by Jean Mayer on former British spy Christopher Steele. In that article, Steele is alleged to have started a dossier in which officials of the Russian Foreign Ministry claimed to have used “unspecified channels” to name a secretary of state who would support removal of “Ukraine-related sanctions.”
That would have eliminated Romney, who, we noted, was a sworn enemy of the Putin regime.
“I’m not aware of anything regarding that, and don’t know that to be factual in any capacity,” Press Secretary Sarah Sanders told us.
Despite having refused to support Trump when he became the Republican nominee for president, Romney did dine with the president-elect following the election and reportedly discussed joining his Cabinet as secretary of state.
