Clearly disappointed by the defeat of Republican Pat Morrisey at the hands of Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin, West Virginia Republicans were cheered by their retention of the House seat in the open 3rd U.S. House district.

With near final returns in, State Delegate Carol Miller, a staunch conservative, rolled up 56 percent over Bernie Sanders Democrat and fellow Delegate Richard Ojeda.

Miller, 68, is already quite familiar with Congress. Her father was the late Rep. Sam Devine, R-Ohio, who represented the Columbus-area in Congress from 1958-80.  Devine, who rose to become chairman of the House Republican Conference, was a former FBI agent and a stalwart conservative.

In winning the West Virginia seat, Miller becomes the first daughter of a congressman to win a House seat in another state since Rep. Ruth Bryan Owen, D.-Fla, in 1928-32. Owen’s father, three-time Democratic presidential nominee William Jennings Bryan, was a congressman from Nebraska in the 1890’s.

“Carol overcame a lot of attacks from the left and won handily,” Lynn Staton, treasurer of the West Virginia Federation of Republican Women, told Newsmax. “I bet her Dad would be proud.”
