A month after his stunning upset in the Democratic primary for governor of Florida and two weeks away from the November election, Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum remains the front-runner in two major polls released Tuesday.
According to the Quinnipiac Poll, Gillum, a supporter of Bernie Sanders for president in 2016, leads former Rep. Ron DeSantis, R-Fla., 52-46 percent. The margin of error is plus or minus 3.5 percent.
Huge advantages among minority voters were key to the Democrat's front-runner status. Quinnipiac found Gillum, who would be the first black governor of the Sunshine State, leads among black voters by 99-1 percent and among Hispanics by 59-36 percent.
These figures were echoed in a just-released poll from Florida Atlantic University (FAU), which showed Gillum leading DeSantis 41.4-36.7 percent, with 17.5 percent still undecided. The margin of error was plus or minus 3.6 percent.
FAU's findings included solid backing for Gillum among younger voters, with 18- to 24-year-olds favoring him by 46-25 percent.
President Trump endorsed DeSantis in a hotly contested primary and has been to the state several times to underscore his support of the conservative hopeful's bid for governor. FAU's poll showed his job approval rating was 45 percent and disapproval was 42 percent.
