House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., made it clear to Newsmax on Wednesday morning she wants to make a deal with President Donald Trump on an infrastructure package for America's highways — even if he is impeached.

"I don't think we have to wait for that to get a deal on infrastructure," said Pelosi, who spoke to Newsmax at a press breakfast in Washington, D.C. hosted by The Christian Science Monitor.

The speaker recalled how "80% of the time I've spoken with the president on phone or in person, has talked about infrastructure."

"I think he'd really like to do that," she said. "He goes back and forth on things. But when it was time to pay for it, he used any excuse that would do to back away from putting forth a proposal. The purpose of [our] meeting was to say 'what are you [Trump] willing to do in terms of paying for [an infrastructure package]?'"

The speaker made it clear any infrastructure package would be paid for on her terms. In her words, "we cannot do it by continuing to raise the national debt. If we only had the money he gave to 83% of the benefits to the top 1% [of the income earners] in our country, we could pay for a great infrastructure bill. But they chose to go that route."

Pelosi made it clear she has always been willing to work with Trump on infrastructure and "we were willing to hear what he would support."

The president, she said can "persuade the Republicans in Congress to go down a certain route. I haven't given up on that."
