Although Kansas last sent a Democrat to the U.S. Senate in 1932, national Republican leaders are worried enough about losing the seat of retiring GOP Sen. Pat Roberts to pump $7.2 million into the race for his seat.
According to a recently-completed VCreek/AMG poll, Democrat Senate hopeful Barbara Bollier is leading Republican Rep. Roger Marshall by 45.39 to 41.87 per cent.
The unusual tightness of the race, several sources told Newsmax, led Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s Senate Leadership Fund political action committee to recently pump in $7.2 million on behalf of Marshall.
That figure came on the heels of a $5.2 million boost the PAC had already spent on Marshall’s behalf.
These recent figures from VCreek/AMG essentially confirm polls done weeks earlier for supporters of each candidate. According to a survey done by the Keep Kansas Great Political Action Committee, which is close to Marshall, the Republican nominee leads Bollier by 43 to 39 per cent.
An internal poll done for Bollier’s campaign shows her leading Marshall 45 to 43 per cent.
Most Kansas sources who spoke to Newsmax agreed that a desertion of moderate and pro-choice Republicans to the Bollier camp is the reason for her unusally strong showing in an historically Republican state.
The best-known Republican to bolt for Bollier — herself a former Republican who switched to Democrat in 2018 — is Nancy Landon Kassebaum, the Sunflower State’s only woman senator and the daughter of former Gov. and 1936 Republican presidential nominee Alf Landon.
Like Bollier, Kassebaum is strongly pro-choice on the abortion issue.
