With three weeks to go before Iowans go to the polls, a new CBS/YouGov poll showed Democratic challenger Theresa Greenfield with a small 47%-43% lead over Sen. Joni Ernst, R-Iowa.
The survey was conducted after a televised debate that many observers felt was as stormy as the Biden-Trump presidential bout.
"It was one of the most contentious I have ever seen," former Polk County (Des Moines) Republican Chairman Kim Schmett told Newsmax. "[Moderator] David Yepsen repeatedly had to separate the two candidates, just like a referee at a heavyweight boxing match."
Schmett added the combative nature of the debate "was probably good for the senator, whose media at times has seemed to emphasize her role as a caring, compassionate person – which she is – at the cost of minimizing her more perceived reputation as the gun totin', Harley ridin' combat veteran who promised to 'make 'em squeal' in Washington – which she also is."
Throughout the debate, Ernst underscored her designation by Georgetown University as one of the most bipartisan senators in modern Senate history.
Other recent surveys on the Senate race yield similar results to those of CBS/YouGov. Civiqs, for example, found Greenfield leading Ernst 49%-46% and Quinnipiac showed Greenfield's lead over Ernst at 50%-45%.
