The most Republican of Iowa’s four U.S. House seats is site of a political horserace in the twilight days of the 2020 campaign.
According to a Monmouth University poll completed last week, Republican State Sen. Randy Feenstra edges out Democrat J.D. Scholten by 47 to 44 percent.
Monmouth’s findings echo those of a Change Research poll conducted a week before (October 13-15) showing Feenstra defeating Scholten by 50 to 45 percent.
Democrats thought they had a chance in the district two years ago, when onetime professional baseball player Scholten held Republican Rep. Steve King to a career-low 50 to 47 percent reelection. King has represented the district since 2002.
Last year, after King, 71, was stripped of his committee assignments after some controversial statements dealing with immigration, the veteran congressman lost to Feenstra by 45.7 to 36 percent.
Feenstra, 51, and King are both strong conservatives and any differences are stylistic. Feenstra, for example, is more of an economic conservative who doesn’t talk much about immigration and culture (as King did). Their fall-out from their hard-fought primary undoubtedly help put Scholten in his present strong position.
