Despite early talk that Indiana was ready for change at the statewide level, signs are now strong that Republican Gov. Eric Holcomb is headed for a big win in the fall.
According to a just-completed SurveyUSA poll, Holcomb — who moved from lieutenant governor to the top job in 2017 when then-Gov. Mike Pence became vice president — holds a comfortable lead, 55% to 25%, over liberal Democrat and physician Woody Myers.
A former state health commissioner, Myers, 66, made national news in 1985 when he went from 418 pounds to 216 pounds in one year.
In this campaign, he has run as an unabashed liberal in favor of state investment in climate change reform and tougher gun regulations.
A big win for Holcomb is likely to help Republicans in the heated race for state attorney general. In that contest, former Rep. Todd Rokita, a stalwart conservative, is locked in a tight race with liberal Democrat and former Evansville Mayor Jonathan Weinzapfel.
