As embarrassing revelations about Missouri’s Gov. Eric Greitens’ extramarital affair continue to pour out, several Republicans in the Show-Me State now expect President Trump to soon ask for the embattled GOP chief executive to step down.
On Friday, the White House sent a strong sign it was aware of a recent letter by three Republican state senators in Missouri for the President to request Greitens’ resignation
Asked by Newsmax whether Mr. Trump received the letter and would ask Greitens to quit, Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said she didn’t “have an official response at this time, but certainly this is something that is very concerning and something we’re taking very seriously.”
“I’ll keep you updated as we have something,” added the President’s top spokeswoman.
Last week, three Republican state senators wrote the President urging him to ask Greitens, 44, to resign. Noting that the governor is a former Navy SEAL who “has made much of that both as a candidate and while in office.” The lawmakers said Greitens’ training “has also taught him to obey his commander-in-chief.”
The letter was signed by State Sens. Rob Schaaf, Doug Libla, and Gary Romine.
Elected governor in 2016, the decorated veteran and best-selling author Greitens was considered an overnight political star and a potential future president. All of this was dashed in February when the governor was indicted on one felony count for invasion of privacy — by allegedly taking nude photographs of a former mistress and threatening to blackmail her if she made their affair public.
A just-completed Mason-Dixon poll showed 48 percent of Missouri voters want Greitens to resign and 36 percent say he should remain in office.
