In what is by far one of the most dramatic turnarounds in polling of any race this year, a TargetPoint poll released Wednesday showed Rep. Barbara Comstock, R-Va. — by far one of the most targeted Republican House Members anywhere in 2018 — tied with Democratic opponent and State Sen. Jennifer Wexton.

Each of the candidates had 47 percent of the vote, TargetPoint found.

The findings of this poll were especially dramatic, as virtually all recent polls have shown Wexton enjoying a lead of 7 to 12 percentage points over two-termer Comstock.

The political nature of the 10th District (Northern Virginia) is in large part responsible for the vulnerability of Comstock. Although the district has been in Republican hands since 1980, the increasing number of federal government employees has enhanced the political clout of Democrats. Comstock's popular Republican predecessor Frank Wolf had some closer-than-usual races before he stepped down in 2014.

Comstock, a former Bush Administration official who has good relations with federal workers, has outraised Wexton through what The Washington Post called "a Who's Who of the conservative movement." Two years ago, as Donald Trump was losing badly to Hillary Clinton in the 10th District, Comstock was winning her second term with 52 percent of the vote.
