WikiLeaks has so far failed to make good on a promise to help pay for the legal defense of Pfc. Bradley Manning, currently being held in a military prison on charges related to the leaking of classified material.
The Washington Post reports that the group, which recently released a trove of State Department documents, had promised in July to financially support Manning’s defense.
Jeff Paterson, a director of Courage to Resist, told The Post that “it’s a surprise to us that it hasn’t happened yet.” The group, a war resisters’ organization, is hoping to raise $100,000 for Manning’s defense and has already kicked in $50,000.
WikiLeaks has suffered some financial setbacks in the wake of the furor over its release of classified material, with bank accounts frozen and payment options cancelled.
WikiLeaks officials told The Post and Paterson that there was some confusion over the matter but it has been solved and the payment was on the way. Paterson told The Post, “Super. I hope the check is in the mail.”
