Huckabee Tops Presidential Poll in Iowa

By    |   Tuesday, 17 August 2010 09:57 AM EDT

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee leads the field of potential Republican presidential candidates in Iowa, according to a new poll from TheIowaRepublican.com and Concordia Group.

The Iowa caucus will be the first primary in the nation. Huckabee has the support of 22 percent likely Republican voters.

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney finished second with 18 percent, and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich was next at 14 percent. Surprisingly, former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin scored only a fourth-place finish with 11 percent. Texas Rep. Ron Paul was fifth at 5 percent.

Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty and South Dakota Sen. John Thune both registered 1 percent support, and former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum came in at less than 1 percent.

Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour and Texas Gov. Rick Perry received zero support.

The poll, which surveyed 399 people from July 25-28, has a 4.91-percentage-point margin of error.

Republicans will be heartened to learn that the poll also surveyed a general voting group of 500 Iowans, and 34 percent have a strongly unfavorable view of President Obama, compared with 29 percent who have a strongly favorable view.

But 51 percent have some kind of favorable view of Obama.
