The Hill newspaper is reporting Saturday that "House Democratic leaders don’t have the votes to pass healthcare reform. At least not yet."
The Hill's breaking news report is headlined:
“Scrambling for votes, Dems face uphill climb to pass health reform."
The paper notes that, despite the uncertainty, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi "has expressed confidence" that "healthcare reform will pass Congress."
The Hill says that at least 34 Democrats are no or leaning no with "dozens more" still undecided. Pelosi can still win if 37 Democrats vote no.
With so many undecideds, the vote still remains extremely tight. A handful of votes moving either way could swing it for or against the most radical healthcare legislation ever proposed by the federal government.
Pelosi has set a March 21st deadline for an up-or-down vote on the healthcare legislation.
