9/11 Families Back Afghan Surge, Some Wary

Monday, 30 November 2009 05:51 PM EST

NEW YORK -- Americans who lost loved ones on Sept. 11 will watch with keen interest when President Barack Obama presents his new plan for the war in Afghanistan.

Obama plans to outline his strategy on Afghanistan in a televised speech Tuesday.

Some family members said they support Obama's push to send more U.S. troops to Afghanistan _ and they wish he had done it earlier.

Debra Burlingame, whose brother was the pilot of the plane that struck the Pentagon, said the United States can't cede any territory to al-Qaida. Charles Wolf, whose wife was killed at the trade center, said Obama's plan shouldn't include an exit date.

Others were more cautious. Lee Ielpi (EYE'-el-pee), the father of a slain 9/11 firefighter, said he hopes the administration has a solid goal on where the war is going.
