RI Candidate Regrets Language in 'Shove It' Remark

Saturday, 30 October 2010 05:02 PM EDT

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — The Democratic candidate for Rhode Island governor who said President Barack Obama could "shove it" now says he wishes he had "chosen different language."

In an e-mail statement Saturday, Frank Caprio didn't flatly apologize. But Caprio said that while Obama's decision not to endorse a candidate in the governor's race surprised him, he respected it.

Caprio made the remark Monday after learning that Obama would not make an endorsement. Caprio said Obama could "take his endorsement and really shove it."

The White House said Obama was not making an endorsement in the race out of respect to Lincoln Chafee, the independent candidate who endorsed Obama in 2008.

After the comment, a poll showed Caprio's support dropping.

Former President Bill Clinton will campaign for Caprio on Sunday.
