Adm. Allen: Cap Collecting Some Gulf Oil

Friday, 04 June 2010 09:24 AM EDT

Coast Guard Adm. Thad Allen says a cap has been collecting some of the Gulf oil gusher, but crews will not know how much until later in the day.

Allen said Friday that the cap started siphoning oil and gas to a tanker on the surface overnight. Allen says a very rough estimate of how much is being collected is about 42,000 gallons a day.

A main pipe on the blown-out well was sliced a day earlier to allow the pipe to be placed over the gusher.

It's the worst spill in U.S. history.
