Unions Target Wis. Senators for Recall

Union supporters in Wisconsin have launched a recall effort targeting Republican state senators who backed Gov. Scott Walker’s move to curtail collective-bargaining rights by the state’s public employees unions.

Volunteers worked the phones on Sunday seeking signatures on petitions to recall legislators who voted for the governor’s bill, USA Today reports. Wisconsin allows recall efforts to begin one year after a lawmaker is elected. Eight Republicans are now eligible for recall.

Recall petitions require a number of signatures equal to 25 percent of the votes cast in the last governor’s election in a district, the newspaper disclosed — a “high hurdle but achievable for such an emotional issue.”
