Trump Lauds Bachmann as 'Underrated' Candidate

Thursday, 21 July 2011 01:20 PM EDT

Real estate mogul Donald Trump sees Rep. Michele Bachmann as a bright light in the Republican race for the presidential nomination. “I think she’s a very underrated person,” Trump told CNN’s Piers Morgan during a phone interview.

Trump, who decided not to run for the Republican nomination himself, said he “was very impressed with her” when the Minnesota congresswoman and founder of the House Tea Party Caucus visited him recently in New York City.

Trump, who has criticized the GOP repeatedly during this election season, continued to question the party’s strategy, telling Morgan: “I think the Republicans are so misplaying their hand. They have the cards, and it started back in December when they had the lame-duck session and Obama rose like a phoenix.”

Story continues below video.

Trump was particularly blunt in his assessment of House Budget Chairman Paul Ryan, R-Wis., saying, “Paul Ryan’s plan where he attacks Medicare is one of the dumbest things I’ve ever seen, especially if you happen to be running for election.”
