McChrystal 'Crushed' by Retirement

Gen. Stanley McChrystal has been "crushed" by his forced retirement from the Army, says Adm. Mike Mullen.

McChrystal was a four-star general and commander of the Afghanistan war until unflattering remarks that he made about President Barack Obama and senior administration officials were revealed in Rolling Stone magazine last month.

After the comments were made public, Obama relieved McChrystal of command. McChrystal retired to his home at Fort McNair in the Washington, D.C., area.

That forced exile has been rough on the 55-year-old McChrystal, Mullen and Gen. Jack Keane, a former vice chief of staff of the Army, told The New York Times.

“In time he will put this in perspective because of the contribution he has made to this country, and I think he will at some point make peace with himself,” Keane told the Times. “I suspect he’s thinking he let everybody down, he let his troops down, he let his team down, he let the chain of command down.”
