Christopher Shays, the only Republican congressman in New England, conceded defeat late Tuesday.
Shays mustered only 39 percent of the vote in Connecticut’s 4th Congressional District to Democratic challenger Jim Himes’ 61 percent.
Himes is the first Democrat to be elected in the district in four decades.
“We were overcome by a tsunami,” Shays told supporters during his concession speech. “The one thing I would request, please no sympathy. There is only gratitude for what we had.”
