Rove Being Grilled By Conyers on Attorneys

By    |   Wednesday, 08 July 2009 11:27 AM EDT

Former George W. Bush aide Karl Rove was deposed Tuesday by attorneys for the House Judiciary Committee, which is probing the firing of nine U.S. attorneys in 2007.

Rove's deposition began at 10 a.m. and did not end until 6:30 p.m., with several breaks, according to Rep. John Conyers, D-Mich., the committee's chairman.

Conyers would not comment on what Rove told investigators, Politico reported. And Rove's attorney would not confirm or deny that Rove, who served as White House Deputy Chief of Staff in the Bush administration, had appeared before the committee.

A Justice Department probe earlier found that political factors infected the Department’s hiring practices and may have affected its prosecutorial decisions under President Bush.

Conyers' committee first subpoenaed Rove in 2007, but the Bush White House cited executive privilege and refused to make him available for a deposition.

On July 30, 2008, a Congressional panel voted to hold Rove in Contempt of Congress for defying a subpoena to testify. But on March 4, Rove and former White House Counsel Harriet Miers agreed to testify under oath about the firings.

Committee staffers interviewed Miers in June.
