DES MOINES, Iowa — Mitt Romney is defending his conservative credentials hours before voting begins in Iowa.
In an interview with Fox News Channel, Romney says he was the "conservative alternative to John McCain" when both were candidates in the 2008 race.
Romney was responding to rival Newt Gingrich, who said Tuesday that Romney was lying to hide a moderate record.
Romney is looking to win over a skeptical GOP base that hasn't warmed to him.
He also calls Gingrich "angry."
