5 Democrats Backed 'Cut, Cap'; 9 Republicans Opposed

Tuesday, 19 July 2011 09:26 PM EDT

The Republican-controlled House passed legislation Tuesday night to slice federal spending by $6 trillion and require a constitutional balanced budget amendment to be sent to the states in exchange for averting a threatened government default.

But neither Republicans nor Democrats were completely unified in the 234-190 vote count. Five Democrats voted for the Republican-back measure while 9 members of the GOP voted against it. Since some of those who voted against the measure are among the most conservative members of House -- names like Michele Bachmann and Ron Paul --  motives were not fully clear Tuesday night.

Here are the Republicans and Democrats whose votes stood out.

Democrat Yeas:

Dan Boren (OK-2)
Jim Cooper (D - TN).
Jim Matheson (D-Utah)
Mike McIntyre (D – NC)
Heath Shuler (D - NC|)

Republican Noes:

Michele Bachmann (R-MN)
Paul Broun (R-GA)
Francisco Canseco (R-TX)
Scott DesJarlais (R-TN)
Morgan Griffith (R-VA)
Walter B. Jones (R-NC)
Connie Mack (R-Fla)
Ron Paul (R-TX)
Dana Rohrabacher (R-Calif.)
