Rangel: I Wanted Deal, GOP Demanded Trial

Rep. Charles Rangel contends that he signed a plea deal on ethics charges but that Republicans sought a trial on his ethics charges, according to a report in the New York Daily News.

Rangel told Harlem leaders that Republicans' insistence on a trial foiled the deal.

"He said he had signed an agreement. He was ready to go, but I guess politics came into play," Assemblyman Keith Wright, D-Manhattan, said at a Harlem district meeting on Saturday.

A spokesman for Rangel, who faces 13 ethics violations, would not confirm whether a proposed deal was signed, and the House Ethics Committee hasn't yet  commented.
