Rahm Emanuel Eyeing Obama Chief of Staff Position

By    |   Tuesday, 04 November 2008 12:07 PM EST

Beltway insiders are abuzz with news that House Democratic Caucus Chairman Rahm Emanuel is eyeing a job in the White House if Barack Obama is elected president.

The Politico cited sources close to Emanuel as saying he is considering an offer from Obama to be chief of staff.

The position would yank Emanuel, 48, out of the House of Representatives and out of the running as successor to Speaker Nancy Pelosi or other senior Democratic positions should they become available.

Temperamentally enhanced Emanuel — best known for his stint as former President Clinton senior adviser — would be the antithesis to cool-headed Obama. Emanuel once sent a rotting fish to a pollster who angered him, according to a story in Rolling Stone.

For his part, Obama declined to comment on the offer when reporters broached the topic at a recent campaign stop in Missouri, according to the New York Post.

With Emanuel out of the House, Democrats would be left struggling to fill a hierarchy void that could ultimately fraction the party over future direction.

Emanuel was elected to the House six years ago.
