Republican presidential candidate Rick Perry has pledged that he will use the power of the federal government to prevent abortions if he is elected president. The Texas governor has joined seven other GOP presidential candidates in signing the Susan B. Anthony Fund’s anti-abortion pledge, the
Los Angeles Times reported.
Mitt Romney, Jon Huntsman, and Herman Cain have not signed the pledge. The pledge calls for sweeping federal action to stop abortion and binds the signer to appoint anti-abortion advocates to top federal positions, including judgeships, the Times reported.
"There was a giant exhale after the Perry announcement," Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of the Susan B. Anthony List, an anti-abortion organization, told the paper.
There was concern that Perry, an advocate for state sovereignty, might prefer leaving the issue to the states. The Susan B. Anthony List has co-sponsored a "Values Voters" bus tour through Iowa opposing abortion and same-sex marriage, according to the Times.
