Pelosi: US Must Get Out of Afghanistan

Now that Osama bin Laden is dead, the United States should end its war in Afghanistan, says House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi. She also says, like many others, that bin Laden’s death doesn’t erase the threat of terrorism against the United States, CNSNews.com reports.

Pelosi’s comments during a news conference on Capitol Hill Thursday echo the sentiments of an increasingly loud chorus pressing President Barack Obama to pull out of Afghanistan, including a coalition of six other Democratic members of Congress and the liberal MoveOn.org advocacy group, as Newsmax reported Thursday.

“We know the American people are weary of this war,” Pelosi said. “We simply can't afford it. It's huge. We have been there a long time. What more of an impact do we need to make?  Let's figure out what is in our national interest.”

Pelosi visited Afghanistan in March. “What I saw indicated to me that by July 2011 we will be meeting one of the withdrawal dates and then stay on schedule to do the rest,” she said. “I don't know that how much of an impact the death of Osama bin Laden has on that.”
