NBC's First Read blog is reporting that Democrat Bill Owens holds a narrow 2,500-vote lead over Conservative Party candidate Doug Hoffman in the topsy-turvy New York Congressional District 23 race that won't be decided until Wednesday at the earliest.

About 11,000 absentee ballots yet to be counted, NBC reports. Election officials say the counting of those ballots won't begin until Wednesday morning.

According to The New York Times, with 87 percent of the district's precincts reporting, Owens led Hoffman by 49.1 percent to 45.4 percent. Republican candidate Dede Scozzafava, who withdrew from the race after her poll numbers plummeted, was garnering 5.5 percent of the vote.

The Albany Times-Union is reporting a substantially larger lead for Owens – some 6,487 votes.
