WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama takes over negotiations on spending cuts and raising the government's borrowing limit when he holds separate meetings Monday with Senate leaders.
Obama begins the meetings with Majority Leader Harry Reid in the morning. They'll be joined at the White House by Vice President Joe Biden, who has been the administration's point-man in the current series of budget discussions.
Sandwiched in between is a Rose Garden event with the Colorado Rapids, winners of the 2010 Major League Soccer cup.
Democrats and Republicans have been arguing over which programs and groups will have to bear the brunt of sharp budget cuts needed to spur an agreement to renew the government's borrowing authority, which expires in just over a month.
