The National Football League has a boatload of well-to-do owners who are scoring big financial points with the Republican Party, according to a
Center for Responsible Politics study.
The study shows that since 2009, overall political contributions by the 32 team in the NFL totalled $1.4 million dollars with Republican Party candidates getting the lion's share by a 2-to-1 margin.
Houston Texans' owner
Robert McNair has led the way with more than $215,000 in GOP contributions since 2009. The Texans overall have been the most politically active team during that time frame with a total of $293,000 in political contributions.
McNair made his fortune when he sold Cogen Technologies to Enron in 1999.
The study also found a couple of NFL owners helping both sides on the political field, underlining that Miami Dolphins owner Stephen Ross and Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank splitting tens of thousands of dollars nearly evently to Republican and Democratic candidates.
There are some 15 NFL owners with net worths of at least one billion dollars and perhaps surprisingly, the richest of them all is hardly politically active, according to the study.
Seattle Seahawks owner Paul has only parted with $36,000 of his league owner high $13.2 billion net worth since 2009, funneling the money exclusively to Democratic Party candidates.
The study also looked at the political contributions of coaches and players.
