Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney began the formal fundraising push for his presidential campaign with a bang Monday, hauling in $10.25 million from a phone-a-thon,
Politico reports.
The presumed Republican frontrunner gathered more than 700 supporters to hit up all their wealthy friends for about eight hours at the Las Vegas Convention Center.
“That’s a terrific start,” Romney told reporters. “Actually it’s more than just a start — it really gives us the boost that we need at this early stage in my effort.”
Asked if any of Romney’s opponents could have duplicated the fundraising efforts, Romney’s spokesman Eric Fehrnstrom had a simple answer: “No,” he said. “Nobody has copied it because it’s hard to do.”
However Romney ultimately performs in the primaries, he’s certainly having no trouble combing for cash. One fundraiser in Las Vegas said Romney’s take for this quarter will total $40 million.
