Bachmann Stands by $2 Gas Promise

Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachmann, in the GOP candidate debate Wednesday, stood by her vow to push gasoline prices down to $2 per gallon if she is elected. But Jon Huntsman and Mitt Romney begged to differ, Politico reports.

As for the Minnesota congresswoman, "Don't forget the day President Obama took office, gasoline was $1.79 a gallon," she said. "It's entirely possible for us to get back to inexpensive energy."

Former Utah Gov. Huntsman would have none of it. "Of course not," he said when asked if Bachmann's plan was viable. "We live in the free market economy. I'm not sure that dictating prices is going to get you anywhere."

Romney recommended an “all-of-the-above” energy approach, including “clean” coal, natural gas, nuclear power, and renewables. "If we develop those resources and we use our capacity to generate that energy in a wise way, we can have an impact on global energy prices," the former Massachusetts governor said. "Can we get it down to $2? I'm not going to make that prediction. But I can tell you we can become energy secure."
