President Barack Obama had many powerful Democratic allies who buttressed his campaign in 2008. For example, Missouri Sen. Claire McCaskill sent angst through the Hillary Clinton campaign with her skills as Obama’s most effective female surrogate,

McCaskill still likes Obama, but she and many others who regularly stood up for him in 2008 won’t be doing so in 2012. “She’s basically out of the picture for us this time around,” an Obama ally who says McCaskill and other 2008 surrogates will definitely be missed.
“We need more defenders,” the ally said. Obama “is spending too much time communicating about himself for himself . . . I think we’ve only had a couple of people out there speaking for us over the last two years, and clearly, that has to change.”
