Clinton Courts Latin America Leftists

Wednesday, 09 June 2010 06:57 PM EDT

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton is reassuring Colombia that the Obama administration will not reduce support for the country as it heads for a leadership change amid tensions with neighboring Venezuela.

Clinton made the pledge in Bogota Wednesday in talks with Colombia's outgoing president and the two candidates vying to succeed him in elections this month. She said the U.S. will continue to back Colombian anti-drug and anti-insurgency programs no matter who is elected. She added that the U.S. recognizes potential threats posed by Venezuela.

On Thursday, Clinton wraps up a tour of Latin America and the Caribbean during which she has reached out to left-leaning leaders in a bid to reduce the influence of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez.
