Conservative firebrand Rush Limbaugh delivered a rousing Fourth of July speech to residents of tornado-ravaged Joplin, Mo., in which he saluted them as symbolizing the “best that this country has to offer” in a “nation blessed by God.”
“We are celebrating the most unique revolution in the history of humanity,” Limbaugh said to wild applause at the event, which his new Two if by Tea brand of iced tea sponsored. Joplin had won a nationwide contest that included 3,800 free cases of the product and the public event, featuring speakers and music.
“Our founders believed in the power of the freedom of the individual, not the power of an elite government to dictate to the individual,” Limbaugh said, according to

Limbaugh acknowledged survivors of the deadly May 22 tornado as being “the essence of what the Founding Fathers had in mind . . . You represent the best that this country has to offer.”
“American exceptionalism is simply the result of our Founding Fathers’ understanding that our government is not to determine the equality of outcomes in life, because we’re not all the same,” he said. “Our country was determined to permit equality of opportunity, and what you do with it is your business.”
