White House Says Debt Talks in 'Abeyance'

Thursday, 23 June 2011 02:36 PM EDT

ABOARD AIR FORCE ONE (Reuters) - The White House Thursday said debt talks between Vice President Joe Biden and lawmakers had made progress but were in "abeyance" right now.

The budget talks collapsed earlier Thursday after Republican negotiators walked out.

One of the Republican lawmakers has said the talks were at an impasse, but White House spokesman Jay Carney told reporters that they would try to address areas of disagreement in search of compromise.
