Saturday, 02 October 2010 05:11 PM EDT

Conservative writer Joe Sobran, who once was a senior editor at National Review, died Thursday. Sobran, who specialized in social and moral issues, died of kidney failure, according to The New York Times. He was 64 years old.

Sobran began working at National Review directly out of college and lasted until 1993, when he clashed with the magazine's founder, William F. Buckley, and was fired. He later founded a newsletter called Sobran’s: The Real News of the Month.

The Times described Sobran as "an unapologetic paleoconservative, opposed to military intervention abroad, big government at home and moral permissiveness everywhere."
