Ex-Reagan Official: Japan Crisis Shouldn't Halt US Nuclear Expansion

The United States should continue its expansion into nuclear power, despite Japan’s nuclear accidents in recent days, says former Reagan administration official Clyde Prestowitz, now president of the Economic Strategy Institute.

“It is really foolish to stop moving ahead on nuclear power in America because of the problems in Japan,” Prestowitz writes on Politico.

“No one has been killed in Japan, there has been no significant escape of radiation, and the container vessels have been holding up. What is the logic, therefore, of halting further nuclear development, so that we can become even more reliant on oil that is not only dangerous because of spills and greenhouse gas emissions but also because of the risk of relying increasingly on the volatile politics of the Middle East?”
